Is it bad to sleep sitting up?

I often travel for work, and on long bus or train journeys, I end up sleeping sitting up. My neck feels stiff afterwards, but I heard it could be worse for your health. Does sleeping sitting up cause any major problems?

I had to sleep sitting up for two weeks after a major nasal surgery. It can be hard on your neck, so I highly recommend using a U-shaped travel pillow and placing a small cushion under your lower back for proper lumbar support.

It is not ideal for long-term spinal health because it puts pressure on your tailbone and can stiffen your neck. If you are doing it occasionally during travel, it's fine, but don't make it a regular habit at home.

If you are sleeping sitting up because of breathing issues or severe chest congestion when lying down, you should consult your doctor immediately. Do not ignore these symptoms as they might need proper medical diagnosis.

In our old days, we only slept sitting up if we had severe cough or asthma bouts. To soothe the throat, we drank warm water with turmeric. It is always best for the body to lie flat so the limbs can fully relax.

Sleeping in a sitting position can sometimes restrict blood circulation in the legs, which is particularly concerning for those with diabetes. It is much better to sleep flat and keep your feet slightly elevated to prevent swelling.

I used to sleep sitting up on the sofa while gaming late, and woke up with the worst neck stiffness ever. Trust me, just go to your bed and sleep properly if you want to avoid looking like a zombie the next morning.
