Is it bad to sleep in compression socks?

My doctor recommended compression socks for my swollen ankles, and I wear them during the day. Sometimes I forget to take them off before sleeping. Is it bad to sleep with compression socks on?

Unless a doctor has specifically asked you to wear them overnight for a medical condition, it is usually not recommended. For recovery, light stretching and a brief walk before dinner can work wonders for your circulation. Keep the socks for your active hours instead!

Please be very careful with this. I wore tight socks to bed to reduce leg swelling, and it ended up restricting my blood flow, causing severe numbness and skin irritation by morning. You must consult your doctor before wearing any compression wear while sleeping.

In our times, we just elevated our feet on a pillow to reduce swelling, and it worked beautifully. Compression socks are good for daytime walking, but wearing them flat in bed might put unnecessary pressure on your skin. Keep it simple and let your feet breathe at night.

I was also thinking of buying these because my calves ache so much after college standing hours. Are they really very tight to wear at night? If anyone has used light cotton ones, please let me know.

Don't just buy and wear compression socks overnight based on Instagram reels or articles. Wearing them incorrectly can cause deep tissue issues or blood flow blocks. Take an appointment with an ortho or general physician to get the right advice.

As a general rule, standard high-compression socks are meant for when you are standing or moving, not lying flat. If you really need them for varicose veins or edema at night, get the specific 'night-use' low-grade compression wraps recommended by your specialist.
