Is heat stroke a type of stroke?

My neighbour suffered from something called 'heat stroke' during a festival in the sun. Is heat stroke a type of stroke that happens to the brain, or is it something different entirely? I'm trying to understand the difference.

No, it is not a type of brain stroke, but the name can be so confusing and stressful when you are trying to understand it. I remember crying when my father was admitted with it, thinking he had a brain paralysis. It is actually just severe overheating of the body, but still requires urgent medical care.

It is not a brain stroke, but a severe heat illness. While we can use simple home remedies like barley water or thin buttermilk to cool the body on hot days, a true heat stroke is very dangerous. You must take the patient to a hospital immediately if they lose consciousness.

Let me clarify this for you. A heat stroke is not a type of neurological stroke, but rather a state where your body heat rises to dangerous levels. It is a severe emergency, so please always seek proper medical treatment immediately if someone collapses in the heat.

No, beta. A medical brain stroke involves the blood vessels in the head. Heat stroke, which we call 'loo', is caused by extreme sun exposure drying up the body's fluids. Always drink coconut water and keep a wet cloth on the head if you have to go out in the afternoon sun.

Not at all, they are totally different things. Heat stroke is basically severe hyperthermia because of high external temperatures. Don't confuse it with a brain stroke, but treat it as a massive medical emergency anyway.

I actually didn't know this and thought they were the same because of the name. So does a heat stroke not cause any permanent brain damage if it is treated quickly? I would love to know more from anyone who has experienced this.

No, they are distinct. My fitness app's health encyclopedia explains that a brain stroke is vascular (clots/bleeding), while heat stroke is a failure of thermoregulation (body temp >104°F). Both are high-priority medical emergencies though.
