Is heat or ice good for lower back pain?

Been dealing with lower back pain since I started working from home and sitting for long hours. Sometimes I use a hot water bag, sometimes an ice pack. Both give some relief but I'm confused – which one is the correct thing to use for lower back pain, heat or ice?

Please be very careful with back pain. I ignored my backache and kept using heating pads for weeks, but it turned out to be a severe slip disc that required surgery because I delayed treatment. Please get an MRI or consult a specialist doctor if the pain lasts more than a week.

I was researching this yesterday because my back hurts from sitting all day at work. Most sites say that heat is better for chronic muscle stiffness, while ice is for sudden gym injuries. I tried heat yesterday and it actually felt quite relaxing.

Ah, the classic IT sector lower back pain! At this point, my electric heating pad is my second spouse. Jokes aside, heat is fantastic for releasing those stubborn muscle knots from bad posture.

I lift weights and often get lower back tightness. Honestly, a hot shower or a heating bag for 20 minutes is a lifesaver. Ice just makes my back feel extremely stiff and locked up.

I tried everything from ginger tea to heavy massage oils for my back pain. Finally, I realized a simple warm salt compress or heating bag is the most practical solution. It relaxes the stiff lower back muscles so beautifully without any mess.

I totally get it, lower back pain is so frustrating and literally ruins your entire day. A warm water bag placed behind your back while sitting on the sofa can bring so much relief. I hope you feel better very soon!

When I had severe lower back pain, I went to a major hospital and the ortho specialist clearly told me to avoid random home remedies. He said to use ice if it is an acute strain, and heat only for muscle spasms. Better to ask your doctor directly before trying things.

Writing this at 3 AM because my lower back won't let me sleep comfortably. Honestly, a warm heating pad is the only reason I get any sleep at all these days. Ice just wakes me up completely and makes me shiver.

My elders always suggest applying warm herbal oils for back spasms. But when my back pain became chronic, my doctor advised using a heating pad only for 15 minutes to avoid skin burns, and focus on physiotherapy. Trust your doctor's plan above all.

As someone who has dealt with mild back issues for years, I keep both handy. If you just pulled your back today, apply ice to numb the pain. From tomorrow onwards, use mild heat to relax the muscles and improve movement.
