Is hangry a sign of diabetes?

My brother-in-law gets extremely irritable and angry if he misses a meal. My husband jokingly calls him 'hangry'. But I was reading somewhere that this can be a sign of diabetes. Is there any truth to this?

Feeling very hungry and irritable can sometimes happen when sugar levels drop. It is always safe to monitor how you feel after meals and speak to a doctor if it happens too often.

Getting angry when hungry can happen due to sudden drops in blood sugar, which is common in insulin resistance and thyroid issues. I had similar mood swings before my diagnosis. Please get a complete thyroid and HbA1c test done.

It usually just means your blood sugar crashed because you ate too many simple carbs earlier. Try eating more protein and fiber to keep your energy levels stable. If the extreme hunger persists along with excessive thirst, get tested.

Don't let internet forums diagnose you with diabetes just because you get grumpy when you miss lunch. It is a very common human reaction. Go to a certified lab, get an HbA1c blood test, and show it to a proper doctor.

I used to get super hangry and shaky if I didn't eat on time. Turned out my fasting insulin was pre-diabetic. Eating balanced meals on time instead of junk completely fixed my mood swings.
