Is gout a sign of kidney failure?

My neighbour has had gout for many years and now her kidneys are failing. She's telling everyone that her gout was a sign of kidney failure from the beginning. Is there any truth to this, can gout really be a sign of kidney failure?

No, gout is definitely not the same as kidney failure. My father has had painful gout flares in his big toe for ten years now, but his kidney function tests have always been perfectly normal.

Gout is a joint issue, not kidney failure. If you are worried, don't waste money on expensive specialist consultations first; just get a basic Kidney Function Test (KFT) and Uric Acid test at a local lab for 400-500 rupees.

Absolutely not. Gout is joint arthritis caused by uric acid accumulation. While healthy kidneys help filter uric acid, having gout doesn't mean your kidneys are failing. Stay hydrated and eat clean.

Gout is not a sign of kidney failure, but chronic high uric acid can occasionally lead to kidney stones. If you have any back pain, fever, or painful urination, please see a doctor immediately for a proper diagnosis.
