Is flu only contagious with fever?

My son caught the flu, and he has a fever. My mother-in-law told me that flu is only contagious when there's a fever. Is this true, or can someone spread the flu without having a fever?

Not necessarily, little one. You can be contagious even a day before your fever starts, or if you have a milder case without a very high temperature. The virus is still there and can spread. Always be careful.

Nah, not really. I've had flu-like symptoms, like a really bad cough and body ache, but no fever, and my roommate caught it from me. So I guess you can spread it even without a temperature.

No, it's not just with fever. You can be contagious without one. That's why it's so tricky. Going to the doctor for a test just for a cough feels expensive sometimes, but it's important to know so you don't spread it further.

No, that's a common misconception. You can be contagious even before or without a fever. For people like me with diabetes, catching the flu can be serious, so we always have to be extra careful, even if someone just has a sniffle and no fever.

Not really. My mum always says if you have a cough or runny nose, even if no fever, stay home and rest. The germs are still there. Simple masks and hand washing really help, no need to overthink it too much.

Oh, so this means I could be spreading it without even knowing I have it, if I don't get a fever? That's quite a shock. So, should I just avoid people if I have any flu symptoms at all?

Definitely not! I had flu once, just a slight cough and body ache, no fever, and ended up with bronchitis. My doctor said I was contagious the whole time. Please see a doctor for proper diagnosis, don't assume no fever means no risk.

My doctor clearly stated that individuals can transmit the flu virus before fever develops and even if fever never occurs. The peak contagiousness is usually within the first 3-4 days after illness onset, but you can be contagious from about one day before symptoms appear up to 5 to 7 days after.

Oh, beta, in my time, we used to say 'sardi-khansi, na kare insaan ko pareshaani'. But truly, I've seen people spread it without having a high fever. It's more about the symptoms like cough and sneezes. So, no, not only with fever.

It's so confusing, right? You feel okay without a fever, but then you worry about others. It's totally valid to feel stressed about this. But no, you can still be contagious. Just take precautions.
