Is diabetes mellitus genetic?

My father and his brother both have diabetes mellitus, which makes me think it might be hereditary. Is diabetes mellitus genetic?

Yes, especially for Type 2 diabetes mellitus, there's a strong genetic component. My family has a history, so I've always been extra careful. Even with genes, what you eat and how much you move makes a big difference. Sugar control is key.

Haan, it can be genetic. My parents had Type 2, so the doctor said I'm at higher risk. It just means you have to be more disciplined. Simple things like walking after dinner and cutting down on sweets, like mithai and aerated drinks, can help a lot.

Yeah, genetics play a role in diabetes mellitus, especially Type 2. So if it's in your family, you need to be smart about your diet and hit the gym. Not saying you'll definitely get it, but why take chances, right? Stay active, eat clean.

For sure, there's a genetic predisposition, especially with Type 2. My fitness trainer told me if it's in your family, you need to be even more active. Even a brisk 30-min walk daily can make a huge impact alongside a balanced diet, if your doctor says it's okay.

My endocrinologist explained that diabetes mellitus, particularly Type 2, has a significant genetic component. While genes increase susceptibility, lifestyle factors like diet and physical activity play a crucial role in its manifestation and management. It's a combination of both.

Oh, I see. So it's genetic then. Does that mean if one of my parents has it, I automatically will too? Or is it more complicated than that?
