Is dandruff dry or oily scalp?

I'm so confused about dandruff. Sometimes my scalp feels super dry and tight, but other times it feels a bit oily. Does dandruff come from a dry scalp or an oily scalp?

This confuses me so much! Sometimes my scalp feels super dry and flaky, and other times it's oily but still has flakes. Can it be both? Does anyone else experience this, and which kind is 'real' dandruff?

Actually, dandruff is more commonly associated with an oily scalp, not a dry one. The yeast (Malassezia) that often causes dandruff thrives on the oil (sebum) produced by the scalp. Dry scalp, while also causing flaking, is a different condition. It's always best to consult a dermatologist for a precise diagnosis.

Haanji, yeh thoda confusing hai. But mostly, dandruff is because of an oily scalp. Woh jo fungus hai na, usko tel pasand hai. Dry scalp toh bas khushki hoti hai. Toh na, dono same nahi hain. Apne baal check karo, agar oily feel hote hain toh dandruff ka chance zyaada hai.

Dandruff is more often linked to an oily scalp. The flakes come from irritation and fungal overgrowth that thrives on oil. Dry scalp is simply lack of moisture. They are different conditions.

I tried so many things thinking my scalp was just dry, but actually, my doctor said my dandruff was because of an oily scalp and the yeast. It was a revelation! So, most 'true' dandruff is on the oily side. If your scalp feels tight and itchy with tiny flakes, it might be just dry scalp, which needs different care.

From my experience, dandruff usually happens with an oily scalp. The yeast that causes it absolutely loves the sebum. Dry scalp also flakes, but those flakes are usually smaller and the scalp feels tight, not oily. So if you have oily hair and flakes, it's probably dandruff, and you need a good anti-fungal shampoo, not just a moisturizer.
