Is chronic kidney disease the same as renal failure?

My brother's doctor used both 'chronic kidney disease' and 'renal failure' when talking about his condition. I'm a bit confused. Is chronic kidney disease the same as renal failure, or are they different stages?

No, they aren't the same, but they're related. Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is the gradual decline in kidney function over time, often measured in stages. Renal failure, or End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD), is the final, most severe stage of CKD where the kidneys can no longer function on their own. It's important to differentiate for treatment. Monitoring vitals and health metrics helps catch CKD early.

Oh, this is confusing terminology, like 'biryani' vs 'pulao' – both rice dishes but not quite the same! 😂 So, CKD is the long-term, slow damage to kidneys, which has different stages. Renal failure is like, the *very last* stage of CKD when the kidneys totally give up. So, one leads to the other, but they're not identical. Important to know the difference for diet planning too!

They are not quite the same. Chronic kidney disease is when your kidneys are slowly losing their strength. Renal failure is the stage when they have almost stopped working completely. So, one is a progression towards the other. For such serious things, please always consult a good doctor; don't rely only on home tips.

Ha ha, welcome to the confusing world of medical terms! No, my friend, they are not the same. CKD is like your car engine slowly losing power over years. Renal failure is when the engine finally conks off completely. One is a gradual decline, the other is the ultimate breakdown. So, different but definitely related. My body feels like it's in CKD sometimes, but hopefully not failure yet! 😂

From my experience, no, they are not the same. I was diagnosed with early-stage CKD and got super worried. My doctor explained that CKD is the *process* of kidney damage over time. Renal failure is what happens when that damage becomes so severe that your kidneys stop working. My focus now is on managing my CKD to prevent it from ever becoming full renal failure.
