Is chocolate good for diabetics?
My mother has had diabetes for many years and she craves sweets. I heard that dark chocolate might actually be good for diabetics. Is this true, or is it better to just avoid it completely?

I completely understand the panic when you get diagnosed and feel like you have to give up everything you love. It is very stressful. But you don't have to completely ban chocolate, just shift to 85% dark chocolate which has very little sugar and won't spike your levels drastically.
It feels so unfair when you have a sweet craving and your body just doesn't cooperate. I used to feel so isolated watching others eat desserts. Finding sugar-free dark chocolate was a life changer for my mental peace, even if I only eat a tiny square.
From what I see daily, regular milk chocolate is bad news for your HbA1c because of the added sugars. However, pure dark chocolate contains cocoa flavonoids which can actually improve insulin sensitivity slightly. Just stick to portion-controlled dark variants.
Please do not experiment with eating chocolate based on online comments. Every diabetic's body reacts differently depending on their medication and insulin levels. Get a proper diet chart made by your doctor or dietician to be absolutely safe.
If your doctor permits, a tiny square of dark chocolate is fine. I usually have it right before my evening gym session or a brisk walk so my body utilizes those carbs immediately. Keeping active is key to enjoying these small treats without guilt.
