Is cardiac arrest the same as a heart attack?

My father had a cardiac event recently, and the doctors explained it as a 'cardiac arrest.' My aunt keeps saying it's the same as a 'heart attack.' Is cardiac arrest truly the same as a heart attack, or are they different medical emergencies?

Beta, don't confuse these two. A heart attack is like a blockage in the plumbing, but cardiac arrest is when the heart’s electrical system completely shuts down. For general heart strength, we should always have light food and walk daily, but during any chest heaviness, don't try home remedies. Go straight to a big hospital.

I used to get so confused about this myself. When my cousin had an episode years ago, the doctor explained that one is a circulation problem and the other is electrical. Try not to panic reading about these things online. Just keep your routine medical checkups up to date and live tension-free.

No, they are different but both are serious. Being diabetic, I keep a close eye on heart health because high sugar can silent-damage blood vessels. If there is pain or sudden sweating, it could be a heart attack. Keep your sugar and BP in check, and always have emergency numbers ready on your phone.

No, they are actually totally different conditions, though both are serious medical emergencies that need immediate doctor care.

Actually I was reading a medical blog on this last week! Think of a heart attack as a plumbing issue where blood flow is blocked, but cardiac arrest is an electricity issue where the heart suddenly stops beating. It is super scary but good to know the difference. Everyone should really learn basic CPR, honestly.

My father went through cardiac arrest and survived only because someone nearby gave immediate CPR. A heart attack can lead to cardiac arrest, but they are not the same. If someone collapses and isn't breathing, call the ambulance immediately and start chest compressions. Don't waste even one second waiting for them to wake up.
