Nature has provided us with wonderful bitter foods like cacao that can actually support our health. It has antioxidants that help with insulin sensitivity. Just consume it in its natural, pure form without adding artificial sugars, and take care of your body.
I totally get it, craving something sweet while managing diabetes is so hard. Pure cacao is actually great because it is packed with antioxidants and has very little sugar. Just make sure you are using raw cocoa/cacao nibs or unsweetened powder, not normal chocolate.
I have been using a spoon of pure unsweetened cacao powder in warm almond milk with a pinch of cinnamon for my husband's evening drink. It is a very comforting home remedy that satisfies his sweet cravings without raising his blood sugar levels at all.
My grandmother used to say bitter foods are medicine for sugar, and cacao fits that well. It contains flavonoids which are good for heart health in diabetics, but my doctor still advised me to keep the portion small. Check with your doctor to see how it fits your daily calorie plan.
When I was first diagnosed with diabetes, I was devastated thinking I could never enjoy chocolate flavors again. Finding out that raw, unsweetened cacao is actually safe and good for insulin control was such a huge relief. It’s okay to miss your old treats, but cacao is a wonderful healthy alternative.
