Is biking good for lower back pain?

My work involves sitting for long hours, and I've developed quite a bit of lower back discomfort. A friend suggested cycling might help strengthen the core and relieve the pain. Is biking good for lower back pain, or might it worsen things?

Earlier, when I had lower back stiffness, I panicked and avoided all exercise. But then my physio suggested gentle cycling. It actually helped strengthen my core and improve flexibility, which eased the pain. So, it can be good, but with correct posture and intensity. Don't worry, just get guidance.

My doctor explained that for lower back pain, cycling can be beneficial as it's a low-impact exercise that strengthens core muscles without putting direct strain on the spine, unlike high-impact activities. However, proper bike fit is crucial; an aggressive forward-leaning posture can aggravate back pain, while an upright position is often better. Consult a physiotherapist for an optimal setup.

For mild back discomfort, I sometimes suggest gentle stretching or yoga. But for persistent lower back pain, especially if it's intense, you absolutely need to see a doctor or a physiotherapist. Cycling can sometimes help by strengthening the core, but if your posture is bad, it could worsen the problem. Don't self-treat serious pain.

My daughter had lower back pain from long study hours. Her physio suggested cycling on a stationary bike, but emphasized maintaining a very upright posture. It worked wonders for her to build core strength. So yes, with the right guidance and correct posture, it can definitely help.
