Is autism a mental health disorder?

We are trying to understand my nephew's diagnosis of autism. My brother-in-law is calling it a 'mental health disorder'. Is autism actually considered a mental health disorder, ya development related hai?

No, it is a neurodevelopmental condition, though explaining that to our generation is a different project altogether! At my age, even remembering where I kept my spectacles feels like a disorder. Jokes apart, it is just a different way the brain is wired.

It is a development issue, not a mental illness. While keeping a peaceful home environment and a good clean diet helps with calming their senses, you must consult a developmental pediatrician. They are the best ones to guide you through proper therapies.

Actually, it is not a mental disorder yaar. It's a neurodevelopmental thing. Their brain works differently, that's all. No need to stress or get scared by the terms, just look for the right therapy centers near you.

It is a developmental condition, not a mental disorder. Though sleep-deprivation from parenting a toddler is definitely a mental hazard, trust me! Don't overthink the medical labels right now.

In our days, we didn't even have these names, we just thought some kids are quiet and unique. It is a developmental condition. Over the years, I have seen these kids grow up to do wonderful things when they get proper understanding and patience from family.

I have seen many families go through this confusion. No, autism is a developmental condition, not a mental illness. The key is early intervention—getting speech and behavioral therapy early makes the child's life so much easier and smoother as they grow.

No, it is developmental. But please don't rely only on online definitions or what people say. If you are noticing any signs in your child, get a proper assessment done by a certified child psychologist or developmental specialist to be absolutely sure.
