Is autism a mental health condition?

My son's teacher suggested we get him evaluated for autism, and I'm trying to understand more about it. Is autism classified as a mental health condition, or is it something different entirely?

I was actually reading about this yesterday and got a bit confused. I think it is classified as a developmental condition rather than a mental health illness, but I might be wrong. Does anyone know if the therapies for both are completely different?

Hey! It is a brain development thing, not a mental health disorder. 😊 They just experience and process the world in their own beautiful way! Early support and lots of love can help them thrive beautifully. 👍

It is a developmental thing, not a mental illness. But regardless of the label, keeping an active lifestyle helps a lot with sensory processing. If your doctor or therapist permits, simple things like daily structured play or outdoor walks can keep them very calm and happy.

Honestly, my brain is too fried from a 3 AM baby shift to explain the medical difference, but it is a developmental condition, not a mental illness. Though trying to explain this to nosey relatives will definitely give you a mental health issue!

Actually it is a neurodevelopmental condition, not a psychiatric disease. My nephew is on the spectrum, and focusing on speech therapy and occupational therapy early on makes a massive difference. Don't worry about labels, just focus on understanding their unique communication style.
