Is alzheimer's diabetes?
My father has had diabetes for many years, and now he's showing signs of memory loss. Someone mentioned that Alzheimer's is sometimes called 'diabetes of the brain.' Is Alzheimer's literally a form of diabetes?

Oh man, sometimes after a long day, my brain feels like it has both! But no, they're not the same. Though I've heard some chatter about a 'Type 3 Diabetes' in relation to Alzheimer's, but that's complex medical stuff way beyond my tired brain.
No, Alzheimer's is a neurodegenerative disease affecting the brain, and diabetes is a metabolic disorder affecting blood sugar. While there's ongoing research about potential links or shared risk factors, they are distinct conditions. If you're concerned, consult a doctor for clarity.
I'm still learning about these things, but I don't think they are the same. Alzheimer's is about memory, right? And diabetes is about sugar. But is it possible to have both, or does one cause the other?
From what I've seen in my family, they are different things. My grandmother had diabetes for many years, but it was much later that she started having memory issues that doctors called Alzheimer's. So, one doesn't automatically mean the other, in my experience.
Oh god, I've heard doctors sometimes refer to Alzheimer's as 'Type 3 Diabetes', which totally freaks me out! It suggests a strong connection, maybe not the same thing, but definitely related. We really need to keep our sugar in check, it affects everything!
