Is a bicycle machine good or bad for sciatica pain?

I've been suffering from sciatica pain for a few months now, and it's really affecting my daily life. My physiotherapist suggested I try using a bicycle machine for some gentle exercise. Is a bicycle machine good or bad for sciatica pain?

I usually just read discussions here, but I must say a stationary bike can hurt your back if you slouch. Keep your back straight and seat height adjusted if you try it.

I am new here and also looking for solutions for my lower back stiffness. Does anyone know if a recumbent bike is safer than a normal upright exercise bicycle? I am a bit scared to try anything without asking first.

I totally get it, sciatica pain is absolutely miserable and you just want to stay active somehow. For many, the bending forward on a gym cycle actually pinches the nerve more. Maybe stick to gentle walks until a physio checks your posture.

Managing my diabetes means I have to stay active, but when my sciatica flared up, cycling made it worse because of the constant sitting pressure. Walking gently was a much safer way to keep my blood sugar levels in check without straining my nerve.

My fitness app tracker shows my recovery metrics improve on days I do light, upright stationary cycling, but heavy resistance definitely triggers my lower back flare-ups. Track your pain levels on a scale of 1-10 before and after a 10-minute session to find your sweet spot.

I was actually reading up on this yesterday because my uncle has sciatica. Some articles say the cycling motion can irritate the piriformis muscle which presses the nerve. It seems very subjective, so better to consult a physical therapist before starting.

Look, instead of investing in heavy gym cycles, just do simple hamstring stretches and daily 20-minute walks on a flat surface. It works beautifully for sciatica and costs zero rupees. If you must use the machine, keep the resistance very low.
