For something as expensive and critical as a 4-stroke boat motor, it is always safest to have a certified marine mechanic do the winterization. A small mistake can lead to major engine failure on the water next year.
According to official marine engineering guidelines, used engine oil contains combustion byproducts that can cause internal corrosion over winter. Always perform an oil and filter change before long-term storage.
Winterizing this motor takes more patience than my weekly cardio sessions! Just remember to flush the cooling system, change the oil, and add fuel stabilizer. Don't skip it, or your wallet will suffer in the spring.
I just finished winterizing my 4-stroke last week. Make sure you run the engine with the stabilized fuel for about 10-15 minutes so the treated fuel reaches the fuel injectors and protects them.
I get so worried that a tiny bit of water will remain in the lower unit and freeze. Make sure you change the gear lube and check for any milky discoloration, which means water is leaking inside. It is better to double-check everything.
Taking proper care of our useful machines is a wonderful way to show gratitude for their service. Clean the motor lovingly, drain the fluids completely, and store it safely in a dry place. Blessings for a peaceful winter.
