How to use melatonin for sleep?

My sleep has been really disturbed lately, and a pharmacist suggested melatonin. I picked up some tablets, but I'm not sure about the right dosage or when to take it for effective sleep. Should I take it right before bed?

I was struggling with horrible insomnia last month after a stressful project. My doctor put me on a very low dose of 2mg melatonin, which I took exactly 30 minutes before hitting the bed. It really helped reset my sleep cycle, and I've now successfully stopped taking it without any issues.

I can only tell you what I did when I had jet lag. I took a 3mg dissolvable melatonin tablet about an hour before sleep, kept my room completely dark, and kept my phone away. It worked well for me, but since it is a hormone, you should definitely ask a physician before making it a daily habit.

I remember panicking on my third night of taking melatonin because I woke up feeling slightly dizzy in the morning. I thought it was a major side effect, but my doctor calmly explained it was just a slightly high dose for my body and reduced it to 1.5mg. After that, I slept beautifully and felt completely fine.

I am planning to try melatonin tonight but I am honestly so scared of getting dependent on it or waking up with a heavy head tomorrow. Has anyone else felt super groggy or experienced weird dreams after taking it? Please let me know if there are any safe ways to avoid this.

While melatonin is a popular supplement, please check the ingredients carefully to ensure the capsules are 100% vegetarian, as some use animal gelatin. Also, don't rely only on pills; try eating melatonin-rich foods like almonds, walnuts, and warm milk in the evening for a more natural approach to sleep.

I have used melatonin on and off for shift-work sleep disorder. The trick is to start with the lowest possible dose, like 1mg, because taking 5mg or 10mg straight away will only give you headaches and morning fatigue. Also, if you keep scrolling on your phone after taking it, the light will block the melatonin from working anyway.

Take a low dose of 1 to 3mg about 30-60 minutes before bed and make sure your room is pitch black.
