How to use infrared thermometer for fever?

My son has been having a mild fever since morning, and I have an infrared thermometer at home. I'm not very familiar with how to use it correctly to get an accurate reading, especially for a child. Could someone please explain the right way?

I know how stressful it is when someone at home gets sick and you are constantly checking their temperature. For infrared thermometers, make sure the forehead is completely dry from sweat, otherwise the reading shows much lower than actual. Hope everyone is okay at your home.

These infrared guns are quick but sometimes inaccurate. Instead of spending 1500 rupees on a fancy one, I prefer keeping a standard digital under-arm thermometer which costs under 200 rupees and is much more reliable. Save that money for doctor consultations or basic blood tests if the fever continues.

We bought one during college exams when everyone was falling sick. You just have to hold it about 2 to 3 inches away from the center of the forehead and click. Don't touch it directly to the skin or the reading goes totally wrong.

Keep the sensor clean from dust and measure from a short distance of 3-5 cm. If the fever is high, please don't wait and consult a doctor soon.

I can only share what we do at our house. We keep the person in a room with stable temperature for 10 minutes before checking, and hold the sensor straight at the forehead. If the reading seems too high or they feel very hot, we immediately call our family doctor.

Actually yaar, these IR thermometers can be super tricky if there is a fan blowing directly on the face. Always turn off the AC or fan for a minute, take three readings on the forehead, and take the average. Otherwise, it gives weirdly low temperatures.
