How to treat diabetic dry skin?

My father has had diabetes for many years, and his skin, especially on his legs, has become very dry and scaly. He complains it's quite itchy and uncomfortable. What can we do to help with his dry diabetic skin?

Applying natural virgin coconut oil right after a warm bath when the skin is still damp works beautifully for dryness. Also, drinking adequate water and practicing deep pranayama daily helps improve blood circulation, which naturally nourishes your skin cells from within.

With diabetic dry skin, you have to be very careful because cracks can lead to infections. Just like I have to do regular blood tests for my thyroid levels to keep skin dryness in check, you must keep your blood sugar monitored and controlled. Make sure to consult your doctor for a proper urea-based moisturizing cream.

Dry skin in diabetes often happens due to poor blood flow and high sugar levels pulling moisture out. Focus on staying hydrated, eat healthy fats like almonds and walnuts, and keep your body moving to improve circulation. A good thick moisturizing cream applied twice daily is also essential.

My father was recently diagnosed with diabetes and his legs are getting extremely dry and itchy. Is it safe to apply normal scented body lotions on his skin, or do we need to buy special diabetic skin creams from the medical store?

Diabetic neuropathy can sometimes manifest as severe dryness, especially on the feet, so we shouldn't take it lightly. While general moisturizers help, it is best to consult a dermatologist or your diabetologist. They can recommend specific ceramide-based creams that protect the skin barrier effectively.

It can be really uncomfortable to deal with itchy, dry skin. Try using a soap-free body wash instead of harsh soaps, and apply a thick, fragrance-free moisturizer like Cetaphil right after washing. Hope your skin feels better soon.
