How to tell the difference between sciatica and hamstring pain?

I've had this nagging pain in my lower back and down my leg for a while now. My physiotherapist said it might be sciatica, but my friend who's a runner thinks it sounds more like a hamstring strain. How can I really tell the difference between the two?

Always best to get any persistent leg pain checked by a doctor, especially if it's severe. Sciatica often feels like a shooting pain, tingling, or numbness that runs from your lower back, through your buttock, and down one leg. Hamstring pain is usually a dull ache or sharp pain just in the back of your thigh, often after exercise. Don't take chances, a doctor can properly diagnose.

Okay, so sciatica pain is nerve pain. It originates from your lower back, so you'll feel it radiating down your leg, sometimes even to your foot, with numbness or weakness. Hamstring pain is muscle pain; it's localized to the back of your thigh and usually hurts when you stretch or use that muscle. They feel distinctly different if you pay attention, but a physio can confirm.

Oh, both can be so nagging! I've tried balms and stretches for both. For hamstring, it's usually just that spot at the back of your thigh, and gentle stretching can sometimes help. But for sciatica, the pain travels, sometimes from your buttock all the way to your foot, and it feels like a nerve is pinched. That one needs more than just home remedies, a proper doctor or physio is key.

Haan na, yeh back pain aur leg pain bahut confuse karte hain. Sciatica mein na, pain poora neeche tak jaata hai, کمر se leke पैर tak, aur kabhi kabhi lagta hai jaise current lag raha ho. Hamstring pain bas thigh ke peeche hi hota hai, muscle mein. Agar woh current wala feeling hai, toh doctor ko dikhao jaldi se.

I totally get how confusing and scary these pains can be, I've been there with my own health worries. With sciatica, it's like an electric shock or burning feeling that travels all the way down, sometimes accompanied by tingling. Hamstring pain is more like a pulled muscle, a sharp or deep ache in the back of your upper leg. If it's the radiating type, definitely get it looked at.

One simple way to think about it is that sciatica is a nerve issue, so you'll feel symptoms along the nerve pathway, not just the muscle. Hamstring pain is typically from overuse or strain of the muscle itself. If you're experiencing numbness, tingling, or weakness along with the pain, that points more towards sciatica. For hamstring, rest and ice often help quickly.
