How to tell the difference between dandruff and nit eggs?

My younger sister is complaining of an itchy scalp and I see some white flakes in her hair. Our mom is worried about lice because of a notice from school. How can we tell if it's just regular dandruff or actual nit eggs?

Oh, this was such a headache with my kids, I tried everything! Dandruff flakes are dry, irregular in shape, and they fall off easily when you brush or shake your hair. Nits, on the other hand, are tiny, oval, often yellowish-white, and are stuck super firmly to individual hair strands, close to the scalp. You can't just flick them off; they really cling on. Use a fine-toothed comb to check!

Dandruff will literally flake off your scalp and hair, often bigger pieces. Nits are tiny, usually the size of a grain of sand, and they are glued to the hair shaft. You'll need to physically pull them off. For dandruff, neem oil or apple cider vinegar rinses can help. For nits, a special comb and treatment is needed, or if it's severe, definitely consult a doctor.

Ho na, this is a common confusion! Dandruff, it's like tiny, dry, white snow flakes jo easily nikal jaate hain. Nits, na, they are tiny, oval-shaped, aur they stick to your hair like fevicol, close to the scalp. You can't just brush them away, you have to literally pull them off with your nails or a nit comb. Check carefully, haan?

Okay, easy peasy! ✨ Dandruff is flaky and falls off your hair super easily. Nits are tiny, like little sesame seeds, and they are literally glued onto your hair strands, super close to your scalp! You'll need a special comb to get them out. If it sticks, it's a nit! 😉

Don't make my mistake and ignore it! I thought it was just bad dandruff for weeks and it turned out to be nits spreading like crazy. Dandruff is loose and powdery. Nits are small, clear or white, and they cling to the hair strand like glue, especially near the roots. If you can't flick it off with your finger, it's probably a nit. Get it checked and treated right away, it spreads so fast.

The key differentiator lies in their adherence and appearance. Dandruff consists of dry, irregular, white flakes that shed easily from the scalp or hair. Nits (head lice eggs) are tiny, oval, translucent to yellowish-white specks that are firmly attached to the hair shaft, usually within a quarter-inch of the scalp. They cannot be easily removed by brushing or shaking. If uncertain, a close inspection with a magnifying glass or consultation with a healthcare professional is advisable.
