How to tell nits from dandruff?
My daughter has been scratching her head a lot, and I see some small white flakes. Her school recently had a lice outbreak. How can I tell if it's just dandruff or if she has nits from head lice?

Dandruff flakes are dry and white, they fall off easily from your scalp. Nits, on the other hand, are tiny, usually yellowish-white, and are stuck firmly to the hair strands, closer to the scalp. You can't just brush them off. Simple.
Just as with managing diabetes where we are careful about what we consume, we need to observe our body carefully. Nits are firmly attached to the hair shaft and are difficult to remove, unlike dandruff, which flakes off easily. If you're unsure, consulting a specialist is always better than self-diagnosing.
Arre yaar, I remember this struggle with my kids! Dandruff is loose, like little snow flakes. Nits, those devils, they stick to the hair like superglue. You try to flick them, they just sit there, mocking you. If it's stuck, it's probably a nit. Then the combing starts!
Okay, practical tips: Nits are oval-shaped and are cemented to the hair shaft, almost like a tiny grain of rice that won't move even if you try to slide it off. Dandruff flakes are irregular in shape, dry, and easily dislodge from the hair or scalp. Use a magnifying glass if unsure.
From my experience, nits are really tiny and hard to see, and they cling to the hair strand very tightly. Dandruff, however, is bigger and just flakes off easily. A good way to check is to try and pull it off the hair. If it doesn't move easily, it's likely a nit.

Oh god, I totally panicked once thinking my daughter had nits, but it was just dandruff! Nits are usually translucent or whitish, really tiny, and you can't just blow them away. Dandruff is flaky and easily falls off. Take a deep breath, it might just be dry scalp!
