How to tell if you have dandruff or dry scalp?

My scalp has been super itchy lately, and sometimes when I comb my hair, little white flakes fall. My friend said it could be either dandruff or just dry scalp. How do I know which one it is?

My grandmother always told me to use warm coconut oil with curry leaves for any hair issue, but honestly, it didn't help when I had heavy yellow flakes. When I finally went to a dermatologist, he explained that dry scalp just has tiny white dust-like flakes, while dandruff is oily and sticky. Better to get it checked once by a skin specialist so you get the right shampoo.

I used to get crazy itching after my daily gym workouts and thought it was dandruff, but it was just sweat drying up my scalp. If it's just dry scalp, drinking lots of water and eating healthy fats like almonds helps a lot. If the flakes are big and oily even after washing, then it might be proper dandruff.

I noticed my scalp got very dry when I cut down on healthy oils in my vegetarian diet. If it's just dry scalp, adding flaxseeds and ghee to your food can make a big difference from inside. But if it is actual dandruff, it is usually a fungal issue, so diet changes alone won't cure it completely without a proper medicated wash.

At 50, my hair is mostly gone anyway, but whatever is left still manages to itch! Actually, dandruff flakes are usually yellowish and greasy, while dry scalp is just dry skin that falls off like powder when you scratch. If your black shirts are constantly ruined, you should probably consult a doc and end the mystery.

I actually tracked my skin hydration levels on an app last winter because my head was itching so much. If your scalp is tight and dry all over your body too, it is likely just a dry scalp. Dandruff is usually localized, oily, and can even cause red patches, so you might need a proper salicylic acid or ketoconazole shampoo for that.

Oh god, last year I panicked thinking my hair was falling out because of some serious scalp infection. Relax, it turned out to be just seasonal dry scalp because of the changing weather. I used a mild, sulfate-free shampoo and kept my scalp hydrated, and it completely went away in two weeks.

In my experience, when the mind is restless, it shows on our skin and scalp. Calm your system with daily sheetali pranayama and check the texture of your scalp buildup. If the flakes are dry, light, and blow away easily, it is just lack of moisture; dandruff flakes are heavier and stick to the hair strands.
