How to tell if infant has asthma?

My son, who is almost two, sometimes gets a cough that sounds really chesty, especially when he runs around a lot. My wife's family has a history of asthma. How can we tell if this is just a normal cough or if he might have asthma?

Infant asthma is tricky to diagnose, it's not always straightforward. At our hospital, the doctors look for recurrent wheezing, persistent coughing, difficulty breathing, or rapid breathing, especially after activity or crying. If you suspect it, please talk to your pediatrician clearly about all symptoms. They might do some tests or try a trial medication.

If your infant is sounding like a tiny whistle or coughing like an old smoker, it's definitely time to see the doc! My little one used to get very irritable when his breathing was off, like he'd been up all night managing my finances. Don't guess, just take them to the specialist. Your sleep depends on it!

It's so hard to see your baby struggling to breathe, the worry is immense. We spent many sleepless nights trying to figure out what was wrong. Watch for frequent wheezing, a persistent cough that doesn't go away with colds, and any difficulty or rapid breathing. It's truly a scary time, but doctors can help manage it.

For infants, it's mostly about observing their breathing pattern. Wheezing, persistent cough, or rapid, shallow breathing are common signs. You might also notice their chest caving in a bit. Definitely consult a pediatrician; they can guide you on how to manage it, and sometimes, even gentle exercise, once approved, can help improve lung function as they grow.

My niece had this, and it was scary! We noticed she'd get a really tight cough and wheezing sound, especially after playing or when it was cold. Her breathing would become really fast and shallow. We rushed her to the doctor, and they confirmed it. They gave her an inhaler, and it made a huge difference.

My son was diagnosed with infant asthma. I noticed persistent coughing, especially at night or early morning, and a wheezing sound when he breathed. Sometimes his chest would retract (sink in) with each breath. It was heartbreaking to see. Please observe these carefully and discuss with your pediatrician. Early diagnosis helps a lot.

Please, if you have any doubt, get it checked immediately. I once thought my child's constant cough was just a cold, but it escalated. Look for wheezing, breathlessness, or a cough that just doesn't quit, especially when they're playing or crying. Don't make my mistake; early intervention is crucial.
