How to talk to parents about mental health?

I've been dealing with a lot of stress and anxiety from college, and I think I need to talk to my parents about it. They're traditional, so I'm not sure how to bring up mental health without them dismissing it.

I've been reading up on how typical Indian households react to therapy. It seems starting the talk by comparing mental health to physical health—like having a fever or diabetes—makes it way easier for parents to understand.

Honestly, the best way to open up to Indian parents is over a good meal, maybe while having some hot samosas. Tell them gently that just like eating good food keeps the stomach happy, you need a doctor's help to keep your mind healthy too.

I tried explaining my insomnia and anxiety to my dad, and he told me to wake up at 5 AM. If you're sleep-deprived and cranky like me, don't argue with them. Just tell them you need to see a doctor for your health and leave it at that.

Beta, do not think your parents won't understand. Sit down with them, explain that your heart is heavy, and you feel very tired inside. Sometimes some warm milk with almonds and sharing your burdens with family can help, but please go to a doctor if you feel very low.

I just went through this last month. I brought my mom along to my therapist's clinic so the doctor could explain my depression to her directly. It completely changed her perspective, and now she is my biggest support.

I agree with everyone saying you should talk to them. It helps to bring home some simple brochures or show them a video about mental health in your local language so they get it.

Do not worry, child. Parents only want their children to be happy and safe. Just speak from your heart and tell them 'Mummy, Papa, I am very troubled inside.' They will surely support you and take you to a good doctor.
