How to take short term disability for mental health?

I've been going through a tough time mentally lately, and it's affecting my work. My HR mentioned something about short-term disability for mental health. How does one go about applying for it and what's the process usually like here in India?

I just went through this process last year when my severe clinical depression made it impossible to work. You need a formal diagnosis and a very detailed clinical letter from a registered psychiatrist stating why you cannot perform your duties. Once my HR approved the medical leave, it gave me the space to actually heal.

My elders used to say to just push through stress, but I realized mental peace is vital. If your psychiatrist strongly advises a medical break, please trust their opinion and apply for the leave. Your health is far more important than any job. Take care.

I completely understand how terrifying it feels to admit you need a break, and the anxiety about what your boss will think is so real. But please put yourself first. Speak to your doctor, get the medical certificate, and submit it without feeling guilty. You deserve this time to heal.

Dealing with chronic conditions like PCOS often triggers severe anxiety for me, so I understand wanting to take a break. I don't know the exact legal rules for every company, but starting with a trusted therapist who can guide you on the medical paperwork is a safe first step. Take it one day at a time.

I am also feeling very burnt out and stressed lately, but I didn't know we could ask for medical leave for mental health. Do we have to share all our private medical details with our corporate HR, or can we keep the diagnosis confidential? If anyone knows, please guide me.

Before you apply, check if the leave is fully paid or partially paid under your company's insurance policy. Psychiatrist consultations and therapy sessions can be expensive, so plan your monthly budget to cover these medical costs while you are off work. It is better to have a clear financial plan.

First, check your company's employee handbook to see what their medical leave policies are. You will need proper medical documentation from a licensed psychiatrist, including treatment plans and expected recovery time. Don't hesitate to prioritize your mental health, it is just as valid as physical illness.
