How to stop sleep paralysis in the moment?

Last night I had another episode where I was completely awake but unable to move or talk for a few minutes. It's a bit frightening. What can I do to stop sleep paralysis when it's happening?

I used to experience horrible sleep paralysis and later found out that my fluctuating thyroid levels were messing up my sleep cycles. Along with learning to wiggle my toes to break the paralysis, getting my thyroid medication adjusted made a huge difference. Do get a full health checkup done.

I am not a doctor, but when I get stuck in sleep paralysis, I focus entirely on moving just one small muscle, like blinking rapidly or wiggling my pinky toe. Once that small movement happens, the whole paralysis breaks instantly. It takes practice but works for me.

Bro, the worst thing you can do during sleep paralysis is panic. I used to fight it hard and feel suffocated, but now I just relax my body, breathe slowly, and let it pass. It usually ends in like 10-20 seconds if you don't fight it.

Don't fall for random internet hacks like chanting or sleeping with iron keys under the pillow to stop sleep paralysis. It is a known neurological phenomenon often linked to sleep deprivation or sleep apnea. Talk to a certified sleep physician for a proper diagnosis.

To prevent it, try sleeping on your side instead of flat on your back, as sleeping straight often triggers it. Also, having a warm cup of chamomile tea before bed helps relax the nerves. But if this is happening very frequently, please consult a doctor to rule out any sleep disorder.

My neurologist explained that sleep paralysis happens when the body transition between REM sleep and waking up gets desynchronized. He advised me to maintain a very strict sleep-wake schedule and avoid caffeine after 4 PM. In the moment, trying to control your breathing patterns helps wake the brain up.

It is absolutely terrifying when it happens, I completely agree. Just try focusing on blinking your eyes to break out of it quickly.
