How to soothe teething pain?

My baby, just 6 months old, has started teething and seems really uncomfortable and cranky. She keeps putting everything in her mouth. What are some safe and effective ways to soothe her teething pain?

My seven-month-old is crying constantly and chewing everything because of teething. Did anyone else's baby run a mild fever during this time? I am really worried and not sure how to calm him down.

Please be very careful with what you give your child to chew. I have seen cases where cheap plastic teethers or hard foods caused choking or bad gum infections. If the baby is in extreme pain, consult your pediatrician immediately.

You can use a clean, damp washcloth that has been chilled in the fridge (not freezer) for the baby to bite on. Gently rubbing the baby's gums with a clean finger also helps. Avoid any teething gels containing benzocaine as they are not safe for infants.

Teething is a tough phase for both the baby and the parents. Just giving extra cuddles and a chilled silicone teether to chew on can make them feel much more secure.

Please don't assume every fever or diarrhea during this phase is just 'teething pain'. I ignored my son's high fever thinking it was normal teething, but it turned out to be a severe stomach infection. Get any fever checked by a doctor immediately.

Do not worry, all children go through this teething phase and they recover beautifully. We used to give them a clean piece of cold carrot to chew on under strict supervision. Keep patience, this phase will pass in a few weeks.

I totally get it, seeing your little one in pain and not being able to sleep is heartbreaking. Try giving them cold, pureed apple or pear if they have started solids. It feels very soothing on their sore gums.

Beta, you can wash your hands thoroughly and gently rub the baby's gums with a little organic honey or honey-soaked clean cloth. But make sure the baby is above one year of age. For small babies, just clean their gums with a soft cotton cloth dipped in cool water.

I panicked when my baby started drooling excessively and refused to drink milk, thinking it was a serious illness. The pediatrician reassured me it was just teething. Once we started giving chilled teethers, she calmed down completely.

Our pediatrician advised against using homeopathic teething tablets as they can contain unregulated ingredients. Instead, he recommended using solid rubber teethers kept in the fridge. If the pain prevents the baby from feeding, ask your doctor for the correct dose of infant paracetamol.
