How to sleep with pleurisy?

I've been diagnosed with pleurisy and the chest pain, especially when I breathe deep or lie flat, is just terrible. It's really affecting my sleep. What's the best sleeping position to ease the pain?

Don't worry, just take a deep breath. Try sleeping on the side that actually hurts; it sounds strange, but lying on the painful side limits the chest wall movement on that side and actually reduces the sharp pain.

I get so scared when I lie down because the chest pain feels like a knife stabbing me. Does anyone else feel like they can only take very shallow breaths while trying to fall asleep?

Bhai, sleep with two pillows under your head so your chest is high up. It will help you breathe easily and you won't feel that sharp pricking pain in the middle of the night.

Keep a couple of extra pillows behind your back so you are sleeping in a semi-upright position. Lying completely flat increases the pressure on your lungs, which makes breathing much more painful.

My physician explained that the pleura layers rub together when we breathe, causing that sharp pain. He suggested sleeping on the affected side to naturally splint the chest wall, which works well alongside prescribed anti-inflammatory medicines.

I hope you feel better soon. Just sleep propped up on some soft cushions and keep a small pillow handy to press gently against your chest if you need to cough.
