How to sleep with nephrostomy tubes?

My father recently had a nephrostomy procedure and now he has these tubes. He's finding it very difficult to sleep comfortably at night with them. Any advice on how to position himself without causing discomfort or disturbing the tubes?

Sleeping with these tubes makes you feel like an astronaut tangled in wires! My advice is to sleep on your back or the opposite side of the tube, and use a small safety pin to secure the drainage bag lower than your kidney level so gravity can do its job.

Actually, sleeping with a nephrostomy tube is so tricky, yaar. I had to build a wall of pillows on my injured side so I wouldn't accidentally roll over on the tube in my sleep. Keeping the bag taped securely to your thigh also helps a lot.

It is essential to keep the tube straight and avoid any kinks during the night to ensure proper drainage. You should discuss with your urologist the safest way to secure the bag to your leg or bed. Never sleep directly on the side of the tube to prevent dislodgement.

I remember crying the first few nights because I felt so delicate and terrified of pulling the tube out. It is an incredibly stressful experience, but please know it gets easier to manage. Just take it slow and secure the tube with extra medical tape.

Be very gentle with yourself right now. Try to sleep on your back with pillows supporting your sides so you stay in one position. Make sure the tubing is loose and has enough slack so it doesn't pull when you breathe or shift slightly.

I had to keep these tubes for three months during my treatment, and you do get used to them. The key is to keep the bag lower than your kidney level, hanging on the bedside frame, to prevent backflow of urine. Sleep calmly and let your body heal.

My father just got a nephrostomy tube placed and we are very confused about how to manage it at night. Does the drainage bag have to be hung on the side of the bed, or can it be kept on the mattress next to him?

You are doing great, just take it one night at a time! Try wearing loose, comfortable pajamas so the tube doesn't catch on anything. Pillow support is your best friend to keep you comfortable and cozy all night long!
