How to sleep with herniated disc and sciatica?

The combination of a herniated disc and sciatica has completely ruined my sleep. I wake up multiple times due to the shooting pain. Is there a specific sleeping position or technique that helps?

Please don't just try to sleep through severe sciatica pain like I did. I ignored the shooting leg pain for weeks until I could barely walk and needed urgent medical intervention. Get a proper checkup and MRI done before the nerve damage gets worse.

My spine specialist explained that sciatica pain happens when the herniated disc pinches the nerve root. He advised sleeping on the unaffected side with knees bent and a pillow between them to open up the joint space. Lying flat on your back with a bolster under your knees also works well.

I was just told I have sciatica from a herniated disc and the pain down my leg is keeping me awake. Is it okay to use a heating pad on my lower back while I try to sleep, or is that bad for the disc?

Be very careful with self-managing sciatica. I tried sleeping in odd positions to avoid the pain and ended up worsening my disc bulge, which led to foot drop. Please consult a neurologist or orthopedic doctor for a safe treatment plan.

I was reading some forums and many people with sciatica swear by the 'fetal position' on their side, but with a pillow between the knees to keep the hips level. It apparently reduces the stretch on the sciatic nerve. Hope this helps you get some rest.

Before spending a lot of money on expensive orthopedic mattresses, try using a simple firm pillow under your knees while lying on your back. It is a cheap and effective way to relieve sciatica pressure. Save your budget for the doctor consultations and physiotherapy sessions.
