How to sleep with extensions?

I just got hair extensions put in, and I'm worried about sleeping with them. I don't want to damage them or pull them out. What's the best way to sleep so my extensions stay nice and don't get tangled?

If you feel severe scalp pain, itching, or hair pulling while sleeping with your extensions, please consult your stylist immediately. Sleeping with them incorrectly can cause traction alopecia. Always braid them loosely to avoid putting direct tension on your hair roots.

My dermatologist advised me that sleeping with heavy extensions can strain hair follicles. She recommended braiding the hair in a loose plait and sleeping on a silk pillowcase to reduce friction. Never sleep with wet extensions as it weakens the bonds and causes tangles.

My daughter got hair extensions for a family wedding and struggled to sleep. I made her do a loose, low braid and we bought a satin pillowcase. It kept the hair from tangling and didn't pull on her scalp at all.

I've had tape-in extensions for months now. The absolute best way to sleep is to put your hair in a loose high bun using a silk scrunchie, or do two loose braids on the sides. Sleeping on a satin pillowcase is a lifesaver, no tangles at all!

If your extensions are pulling on your scalp at night, it can disturb your REM sleep. I use a satin bonnet which keeps my extensions in one place so they don't get trapped under my back when I turn. My sleep quality tracker scores went up significantly after doing this.
