How to sleep with a thoracic herniated disc?

I was recently diagnosed with a thoracic herniated disc and the pain in my back is making it incredibly hard to sleep. My doctor said to be careful with my posture. What's the best way to sleep with this condition?

My spine specialist specifically advised me to sleep on my back with a pillow under my knees to take the pressure off the mid-back. If you prefer side sleeping, place a pillow between your knees and avoid twisting your torso at all costs. It keeps the thoracic spine in neutral alignment.

I deal with chronic back issues and have to be very careful with how I sleep. I find that placing a small, flat pillow under my stomach when sleeping on my side helps support my spine, but please check with your doctor first as every disc issue is different.

Dealing with a herniated disc requires a very supportive mattress; too soft or too hard will make it worse. Try to sleep on your back with a cylindrical pillow under your knees to maintain the natural curve of your spine. Move very slowly when getting out of bed in the morning.

Before you spend a lot of money on expensive orthopedic mattresses, try using a firm cotton gaddi or putting a plywood board under your normal mattress. Also, keep your MRI reports handy and consult a government hospital specialist to plan your treatment without overspending.

This back pain is so annoying, yaar. Actually, what helped me was shifting to a firmer mattress and keeping a pillow between my legs while sleeping on my side. It stops the spine from twisting, otherwise the morning pain is just unbearable.

I know exactly how scary and frustrating this pain is, and how hard it is to sleep when you are worried about making the disc slip more. Just take it slow tonight. Try sleeping flat on your back with a pillow under your knees, as it is generally the safest position for spinal pressure.
