How to sleep on a pillow?

I've been waking up with neck pain a lot recently, and I think it might be my pillow. What's the right way to sleep on a pillow to avoid neck issues and get good rest?

Simple funda: if you're a back sleeper, a flatter pillow is good for neck alignment. Side sleepers need a thicker one to fill the gap between your head and shoulder. Stomach sleepers should try a very thin pillow or no pillow at all. It's all about keeping your spine straight.

It's about finding the right one for *your* sleep position. No one-size-fits-all. If you sleep on your side, get a firm, thick pillow. Back sleepers usually do well with medium-firm. And make sure it supports your neck, not just your head. That's it.

Please be careful with this. I used the wrong kind of pillow for years and ended up with terrible neck and shoulder pain that needed physio. If you're waking up with stiffness or discomfort, don't ignore it. It's worth talking to a doctor or a physical therapist about the right support.

My grandmother always said to keep your head slightly elevated, but not too much. For me, a medium-firm pillow works best when I sleep on my side. If you have any neck pain or discomfort though, please consult a doctor. They can recommend the right pillow type for your specific needs.

I never really thought about it beyond 'pillow under head'. So, different pillows for different positions? Is there a way to know if my current pillow is actually bad for me, or if I'm just sleeping on it wrong?

Ah, the pillow-sleeping dilemma! At my age, I just try to find a position where my back doesn't feel like it's been in a wrestling match all night. Sometimes it works, sometimes I wake up feeling like a pretzel. But seriously, a good supportive pillow makes a world of difference for old bones.
