How to respond to how did you sleep?

Sometimes after a rough night's sleep, people ask me 'How did you sleep?'. I don't want to complain, but I also don't want to lie. What's a polite and realistic way to respond to this question without going into too much detail?

I usually tell people honestly if I slept well or not. My doctor actually mentioned that tracking and openly sharing your sleep patterns can help identify lifestyle stress triggers, so being straightforward is a good habit.

I just say 'Slept like a baby' or 'Could have been better, still tired' depending on the night.

If someone is asking because you look constantly tired, please don't just brush it off. If your poor sleep is causing daily fatigue, it's safer to mention it to a healthcare professional to rule out any sleep issues.

You can keep it simple: 'Slept well, thanks!' or 'A bit restless last night.' If you are consistently sleeping poorly, try avoiding caffeine after 4 PM, as that is a common culprit.

I usually say, 'Slept great, ready for my workout!' A good workout during the day naturally ensures a positive answer to this question every morning.

I always respond based on my actual rest levels. When I was dealing with insomnia, telling family honestly helped them understand why I was low on energy, which really reduced the pressure on me.

In a professional setting, a polite 'Slept well, thank you, hope you did too' is perfect and quick. No need to overshare your late-night work details.
