How to relieve tummy pain in newborns?

My two-month-old baby has been crying a lot and seems very uncomfortable with tummy pain. We tried burping him, but it's not helping much. What can I do to relieve tummy pain in newborns safely?

With my baby, I found that doing gentle bicycle legs really helped release trapped gas. I also used to lay him tummy-down on my chest for some warmth. I avoided any medicines and just relied on burping him thoroughly after every feed.

Don't panic, newborn tummies are very sensitive and gas pain is very common as their digestive systems develop. Try giving a gentle tummy massage in clockwise circles using warm coconut oil. If the baby is crying non-stop for hours or has a fever, we should definitely show them to a pediatrician.

Tummy pain in newborns can sometimes be due to colic or milk intolerance. It is extremely important not to give any over-the-counter gripe water or home remedies without checking with your pediatrician first. Always get a doctor's clearance to keep the baby safe.

If you are breastfeeding, sometimes the food you eat can affect the baby's digestion. I noticed my baby got less gassy when I cut down on heavy lentils and cruciferous vegetables like cauliflower. Drink plenty of warm water yourself to keep your milk light and easy to digest.

I have raised four children, and they all went through this phase of evening crying due to gas. Applying a warm hing paste gently around the navel, without letting it touch the actual belly button, is an old remedy that works wonders. Keep patience, this phase will pass in a few weeks.

A calm mother creates a calm baby, so keep your breathing deep and peaceful while holding your little one. Gently pressing the baby's knees to their chest mimic the natural wind-relieving pose (Pawanmuktasana) and helps soothe their stomach. Let your touch be soft and reassuring.
