How to massage sciatica pain?

My sciatica pain has been acting up quite a bit lately, and it's making it hard to even walk properly. I've heard that massage can help, but I don't want to make it worse. Can anyone tell me the right way to massage for sciatica pain?

I've tried everything for my sciatica flare-ups. The best massage method is using warm Mahanarayan oil and gently rubbing your lower back and outer hip area in circular motions. Never press directly on the sciatic nerve path if it’s highly inflamed; keep the pressure very light.

With sciatica, the pain usually stems from a compressed nerve in the lower back, but the tightness sits in the piriformis muscle of the glutes. Try rolling on a tennis ball placed under your glutes for a self-myofascial release. It targets the deep muscle knots much better than hands can.

At 55, my sciatica pain makes me walk like a penguin sometimes! What works for me is telling my son to gently rub some warm mustard oil on my lower back and down the leg in downward strokes. It doesn't cure it, but it makes sleeping a lot easier.

Sciatica is caused by nerve compression, often due to a herniated disc, so deep or aggressive massage can worsen the nerve inflammation. A very light, soothing Swedish-style massage can help relax surrounding muscle spasms, but you must consult a physical therapist for targeted nerve glides and exercises.

While a gentle massage with warm sesame oil helps soothe the leg pain, keeping an anti-inflammatory diet is equally important. Drink turmeric milk with black pepper daily to help reduce nerve inflammation from within while you treat the muscle tightness externally.

My elders suggested traditional oil massages for my sciatica, which did provide temporary comfort to the surrounding muscles. However, I highly recommend visiting a doctor or physiotherapist to get a proper diagnosis, as correct stretching exercises are what truly resolve the nerve compression.

Actually, sciatica pain is super annoying, yaar. It feels like a current running down the leg. I just apply a good pain gel on my lower back and hip, and gently massage it in a downward direction. Don't do any heavy rubbing, it just irritates the nerve more.

For quick relief at home, take a warm water bath first to loosen the muscles. Then, have a family member gently massage your lower back and upper buttock area with simple warm coconut oil. Avoid stretching or bending forward immediately after the massage.
