How to maintain kidney health?

My uncle recently went through a kidney transplant, which was a big shock for our family. It's made me very conscious about maintaining my own kidney health. Any advice?

If you are taking high protein diets or gym supplements, make sure you are drinking plenty of water to avoid straining your kidneys. I stick to natural protein sources as much as possible and avoid overusing painkillers for muscle soreness, as those pills are really tough on your filtration system.

I had a painful kidney stone issue last year, and it was a massive wake-up call about my poor hydration. Now, I keep a water bottle with me everywhere and make sure I'm drinking at least 2.5 liters daily. Also, cutting down on heavy bakery items and excess salt really helps prevent issues.

Keeping your blood pressure stable is super important for kidney health, and regular physical activity is the best way to do that. I make it a point to go for a brisk 30-minute walk every day. If your doctor allows, stay active as it really helps your circulation and overall kidney function.

I used to drink barley water and various herbal infusions thinking they would completely detoxify my kidneys, but honestly, balance is key. While these traditional drinks help flush out toxins occasionally, they cannot replace proper medical care. Just eat a clean diet and don't self-medicate.

I've been feeling a bit of swelling in my ankles lately and I'm honestly so worried if it's related to my kidneys. Has anyone else experienced this, or am I just overthinking? I'm planning to see a doctor this weekend just to be safe.

Maintaining kidney health isn't rocket science. Just cut down on processed foods, drink clean water, and stop popping over-the-counter painkillers like candy. If you have diabetes or high BP, keep them strictly under control because they are the leading causes of kidney damage.

Please don't make the mistake I did by ignoring occasional back aches and dark urine thinking it was just heat. I ended up with a severe kidney infection that required hospitalization. If you notice any unusual symptoms, go to a doctor and get a simple urine test and KFT done immediately.

I've noticed this question comes up a lot here, and my advice is always the same: watch your salt intake. In our Indian cooking, we consume way too much sodium through pickles, papads, and processed masalas. Cutting back on these simple things will protect your kidneys tremendously over the long run.
