How to know if your thyroid is off?

My mom has been complaining about fatigue and unexplained weight gain, and she thinks it might be her thyroid. How can you tell if your thyroid hormones are out of balance or 'off'? What symptoms are typical?

Thyroid issues can have really varied symptoms depending on whether it's overactive (hyper) or underactive (hypo). For hypo, you might feel very tired, gain weight easily, feel cold, or have dry skin. For hyper, it's usually weight loss, anxiety, rapid heartbeat, and feeling hot. The only real way to know is a blood test for TSH, T3, and T4. See your doctor to get it tested and diagnosed properly.

Thyroid issues really mess with your energy levels, making workouts feel impossible. If you're suddenly gaining weight despite working out, or losing it without trying, or feeling constantly drained, it could be a sign. I always recommend prioritizing good nutrition and active lifestyle. But if these symptoms persist, get your thyroid levels checked with a blood test. No amount of exercise can fix a hormonal imbalance, but doctor's advice and medication can, if needed.

Just like with high BP, many lifestyle factors influence thyroid health, but symptoms are key. If you're suddenly feeling very tired all the time, unexplained weight changes (gain or loss), feeling sensitive to cold or heat, or experiencing changes in mood, these could be signs. For high BP, I get regular checkups, and for thyroid, it's the same. A simple blood test can tell you everything. Don't delay seeing a doctor.

For small issues, I believe in natural remedies, but thyroid is hormonal and needs proper diagnosis. Symptoms like sudden weight changes (gain or loss), extreme fatigue, feeling very cold or hot, hair loss, or mood swings can be indicators. While I try to maintain a healthy diet with natural foods, if you suspect thyroid issues, please, please see a doctor for a blood test. Home remedies won't fix a hormonal imbalance; only medical guidance can.

If you're feeling very tired, experiencing unexplained weight changes, or noticing changes in your mood or energy, it's a good idea to talk to your doctor about getting your thyroid checked. A simple blood test can provide answers.

Thyroid problems often have a wide range of symptoms that can be easily confused with other things, which makes it tricky. Common signs for an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism) include fatigue, weight gain, feeling cold, and dry skin. For an overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism), it's weight loss, anxiety, rapid heartbeat, and heat intolerance. The most reliable way to know is a blood test to check your TSH levels. Talk to your doctor, they can guide you.
