How to know if my thyroid is out of whack?
I've been feeling really tired, gaining weight unexpectedly, and my mood swings are all over the place. My sister said it sounds like a thyroid issue. How do I know if my thyroid is out of whack?

Thyroid issues can mimic so many other conditions, just like PCOS! You might feel extreme fatigue, sudden weight changes (gain or loss), changes in mood (anxiety or depression), hair loss, or feeling too hot/cold. Also, menstrual irregularities are common. If you have these symptoms, get your TSH, T3, and T4 levels checked. Don't self-diagnose, but do advocate for yourself with the doctor.
My doctor explained that thyroid issues, both hypo and hyper, have distinct symptoms. For an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism), you might feel extreme fatigue, weight gain, cold intolerance, dry skin, constipation, and brain fog. For an overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism), it's weight loss, heat intolerance, anxiety, rapid heartbeat, and tremors. The only way to definitively know is through a blood test for TSH, T3, and T4.
Don't ignore the signs like I did initially! If you're constantly tired, gaining or losing weight without explanation, feeling unusually cold or hot, experiencing hair loss, or having mood swings, these are big red flags. I brushed them off as stress. Get a thyroid test done (TSH, T3, T4). Early diagnosis is so important for proper management.
I used to panic about every single symptom, thinking it was my thyroid! But actual thyroid issues show up as a cluster of symptoms. Look for persistent fatigue, sudden unexplained weight changes (gain or loss), feeling constantly cold or hot when others aren't, hair loss, or significant mood swings. If you have several of these, then it's worth getting a blood test. Don't worry, many people manage it well.
Beta, if you feel tired all the time, or your weight is changing without reason, or you feel very cold always, it could be the thyroid. Sometimes hair also falls a lot. For such things, a blood test is best, a doctor will tell you for sure. You can try a little yoga and good food, but don't depend only on that, get checked by a doctor.
Fatigue, weight changes, and mood swings are common signs. Get tested.
