How to improve mental health in elderly?

My elderly father has been showing signs of loneliness and a lack of interest in things he used to enjoy. I'm worried about his mental health. What can we do to improve mental health in elderly people?

Ensuring our elders get a light, nutritious vegetarian diet rich in vitamin B12 and folate is very helpful for brain health. Oily foods and heavy dinners can cause poor sleep, which directly increases irritability in the elderly. Keep their meals simple and fresh.

While social interaction is great, sudden mood changes, confusion, or severe forgetfulness in elders should not be ignored as simple old age. Please get them evaluated by a neurologist or geriatric specialist to rule out issues like dementia or depression.

Keeping a steady morning and evening routine helps elderly individuals feel secure. Encourage them to do simple physical tasks and make sure they get their thyroid and vitamin D levels tested regularly, as deficiencies can mimic depression symptoms.

The most important thing for elders is to feel needed and not a burden. Encourage them to join local community groups, senior citizen clubs, or temple committees where they can sit and chat with people of their own age group.

My grandmother was feeling very isolated, so we started asking her to teach us her old recipes and tell us family stories. Giving them a sense of purpose and listening to them patiently makes a huge difference. Just be warm and supportive.

If their orthopedic doctor allows, a gentle 20-minute walk in a park during morning hours is excellent for their mental state. Sunlight exposure helps regulate their sleep cycle and physical movement keeps their mood naturally elevated.
