How to improve kidney function in elderly?

My mother is 67 and her kidney function has declined a bit recently. The doctor said it's common for her age, but I want to know what can be done to improve it and keep her healthy. What measures can we take for kidney function in elderly?

For my elderly mother-in-law, we tried several herbal home drinks, but they actually upset her stomach. What really worked was simply keeping her salt intake very low and ensuring she drank small amounts of water frequently instead of gulping a lot at once. It keeps their system stable without pressure.

My father's kidney numbers just dropped slightly in his routine checkup and I am so worried about what to feed him now. Has anyone else felt this sudden panic when their parents reach this age? How do you manage their diet without making them feel restricted?

Elderly kidney care requires constant blood tests which can become a financial burden. I suggest finding a trusted local laboratory that offers yearly discount packages for senior citizens. Regular monitoring helps adjust their medication doses before any serious complications occur.

At this age, their bodies become very delicate. Give them soft, easily digestible foods like bottle gourd sabzi, moong dal khichdi, and fresh dahi. Avoid heavy oils and spices, and always speak to the doctor before giving them any native medicines.

Kidney function naturally declines with age, but conditions like hypertension and diabetes can accelerate it. It's best to consult a geriatric specialist or a nephrologist who can review all their current medications, as some drugs can be tough on elderly kidneys.

As we grow older, our thirst sensation reduces, so we forget to drink water. I have to remind myself to drink water every two hours now. Don't worry too much, just make sure your elderly family members stay gently hydrated and eat simple, salt-restricted food.

First of all, stop letting them pop over-the-counter pain balms or pills for their joint pain, as those are toxic for elderly kidneys. Get their blood pressure and sugar checked regularly. Keep those two under control and their kidney function will remain stable.

You can give them mild barley water (jau ka pani) once a day as it is very cooling and good for urine flow. However, if they have swelling in their feet, face, or experience any difficulty in breathing, please take them to a hospital immediately without any delay.
