How to identify cavities?

I've been feeling some sensitivity in my teeth, especially with cold drinks, and I'm worried it might be a cavity. But I'm not sure what a cavity actually looks like. How can I identify cavities on my teeth at home before seeing a dentist?

Honestly, if you wake up at 3 AM with a sudden thumping pain that makes you want to pull your own teeth out, congrats, you probably have a cavity. Or if you see a tiny black hole while checking your teeth in the bathroom mirror instead of sleeping. Just go get it filled.

If sweet food makes your teeth do a little painful dance, you've got a cavity buddy. Don't worry, a quick visit to the dentist and they will drill it out before you can even finish planning your next dessert trip. It is super common.

I always go to a proper dental hospital for my half-yearly checkups. They do an X-ray because sometimes cavities are hidden between two teeth where you can't even see them. Just ask your dentist to do a thorough check instead of guessing.

I just got two fillings done last week. I first noticed a sharp, stinging pain whenever I drank cold water or tea. If you see dark spots or feel food getting stuck in the same spot every time, it's definitely a cavity starting.

With diabetes, we have to be very careful with oral health as gum infections can happen fast. If your teeth feel tender while chewing or you notice bad breath that won't go away, check with your dentist. Don't ignore it, and keep your blood sugar monitored.

I tried cloves and saltwater rinses for weeks, but they only dull the pain temporarily, they cannot fix the actual hole. If your tooth hurts when biting down, the cavity has reached deeper. Please save yourself the pain and see a dentist soon.

Keep your body's signals in mind. A cavity often starts as a mild discomfort or a rough feeling on the tooth surface when you run your tongue over it. Daily oil pulling helps with hygiene, but once a cavity forms, physical treatment by a dentist is necessary.

I get so anxious about dental pain and kept putting off my checkup, which made it worse. It's totally okay to feel nervous, but checking for sensitivity to hot or cold food is a good way to tell. Finding it early means a simple filling instead of a painful root canal.
