How to help someone in a mental health crisis?

My younger cousin has been going through a really tough time lately, not eating, not sleeping, and seems very withdrawn. I'm worried it's a mental health crisis. How can I best help someone in a mental health crisis?

In my life, I have seen that during a severe crisis, the most important thing is to just stay by their side and listen without judging them. Reassure them that they are safe and this difficult phase will pass. Sometimes just having a calm elder around makes a huge difference.

If someone is in an active mental health crisis, don't try to solve their life problems on your own. Keep them safe, remove any harmful objects from the room, and contact a professional helpline or a psychiatrist immediately. Professional intervention is critical.

I was reading about crisis intervention recently and found that keeping your tone low and calm is very important to avoid triggering them further. It is best not to argue or lecture them about their feelings. Just offer a safe space and connect them with emergency resources.

I had a friend who went through a really dark phase, and honestly, we just made sure she wasn't left alone. We helped her book an appointment with a kind therapist and accompanied her to the clinic. Showing practical, consistent support means the world to them.

Sometimes extreme mood changes and panic attacks can be worsened by hormonal issues like severe thyroid imbalance. While supporting them emotionally, it is also a good idea to suggest a full medical checkup including blood tests later on. Always follow up with a healthcare provider.

Severe stress and mental distress can also cause dangerous fluctuations in blood sugar and blood pressure. Ensure the person stays hydrated and doesn't skip basic meals while dealing with the crisis. Encourage them to see a medical professional for both physical and mental evaluation.

If you need immediate help without high costs, there are several free government-run mental health helplines like Kiran. Plan to consult a counselor at a government hospital first, as they provide very affordable professional therapy sessions.

A mental health crisis should be treated with the same seriousness as a physical health emergency. Please do not assume they will just calm down on their own. Get them evaluated by a licensed therapist or visit a hospital emergency room if they are at risk of hurting themselves.

When a person is highly agitated, helping them focus on slow, gentle breathing can quieten the overactive nervous system. Sit with them, hold their hand if they allow, and practice deep inhalations together. However, if the distress is severe, please seek medical assistance.

At my age, I know life throws some heavy stuff, and anyone's mental health can crack under pressure. Don't tell them to just 'go for a walk' or 'think positive,' it doesn't work that way. Be a quiet support and get them to a real doctor who understands the brain.
