How to help a teenager with mental health issues?

My nephew, who is 15, has been very withdrawn lately, not talking to anyone, and seems quite low. I'm worried about his mental health. How can we, as a family, effectively help a teenager with mental health issues and make sure they get the support they need?

I remember feeling so isolated and misunderstood when I was a teenager struggling with anxiety. Please don't dismiss their feelings as 'just a phase' or exam stress, as validating their pain is the first step to healing. Let them know you love them no matter what.

In our times, we didn't talk much about mental health, which was a mistake. Now that I look back, teenagers just need to feel heard and respected by the elders in the family. Don't compare them to other kids, as that only hurts their self-esteem more.

With our busy schedules, we often miss the signs of withdrawal in kids. Set aside just 15 minutes of uninterrupted time daily to talk with them without any screens or judgments. If things look serious, please book an appointment with a professional child psychologist.

Encouraging them to go for evening walks, play outdoors, and eat healthy home-cooked meals can really lift their mood. But if they are constantly sad, sleeping too much, or talking about self-harm, please take them to a doctor or therapist immediately.

It is really painful to see our children struggle mentally. Just sit with them, give them a hug, and let them know they are safe with you. Your constant support means the world to them.

Try doing fun activities together like baking, painting, or watching a comedy show! 😊 Small happy moments can really help ease their stress and build a stronger, more trusting bond between you both.

Actually, teenagers these days have a lot of social media pressure, yaar. Just being a friend and listening to them without immediately giving a lecture makes a huge difference. Don't force them to talk, just let them know you are there.
