How to get rid of infant dandruff?

My 3-month-old baby has these yellowish, scaly patches on his head, especially near the fontanel. It doesn't seem to bother him, but I'm worried it looks bad. What can I do at home to get rid of this 'infant dandruff'?

For babies, we call it cradle cap. My mother suggested applying a few drops of virgin coconut oil 20 minutes before bath time and gently brushing the flakes out with a soft baby brush, but please consult your pediatrician before trying any new oils.

While making sure my baby's scalp is clean, I realized newborn cradle cap looks like dry oatmeal flakes! It is very common, so don't worry, just use a mild baby shampoo.

This is very common in babies and is called cradle cap. Use a gentle baby shampoo and ask your pediatrician if it looks red or irritated.

When my baby had flaky scalp, I consulted our pediatrician during our routine vaccination visit. Since babies have very sensitive skin, getting a doctor's confirmation is always safer than trying random home remedies.

I was looking this up for my nephew and read that it is actually caused by overactive oil glands in newborns, not poor hygiene. It usually goes away on its own within a few months, which is quite reassuring.

Don't spend money on expensive specialty 'cradle cap' baby creams. A simple, basic baby oil or coconut oil and a soft brush from a local medical store will do the job perfectly fine for just a few rupees.
