How to get rid of high fever?

My little son has a very high fever since yesterday night, and I'm really worried. I've given him paracetamol, but it's not coming down much. What are some safe ways to get rid of high fever quickly?

If you have a high fever, the first step is to consult a physician to find the root cause. At home, you can keep a wet, room-temperature cloth on the forehead to keep the head cool, as my mother used to do, but medication must be as per a doctor's advice.

When I had a 103-degree fever last year, my doctor told me to strictly avoid taking freezing cold showers as it shocks the body. Instead, do normal tap-water sponging and stay under a normal fan, not a high-speed AC.

A high fever is our body's way of fighting an infection, so self-medicating is not safe. Please get checked by a doctor who might advise blood tests for dengue, malaria, or typhoid if the fever persists for more than two days.

I was reading that keeping yourself hydrated with water, coconut water, or warm soups is more important than eating heavy meals during a high fever. Is that true or should we force ourselves to eat?

For a high fever, please do not use heavy blankets to sweat it out, as that actually traps the heat inside. Wear light, breathable cotton clothes, drink lots of warm fluids, and consult your doctor for safe paracetamol dosages.

Please don't try any weird home remedies like onion on feet or herbal mixtures for high fever. Fever can be a sign of many different infections, so get a proper consultation and diagnosis from a certified doctor.

My son's temperature hit 102 last month and I absolutely panicked. But the pediatrician reassured us, gave us the exact fever syrup dosage, and told us to keep his body sponged. He was perfectly fine in three days.

With high fevers, safety should always come first. If the temperature doesn't come down after standard medication or if there is severe headache or vomiting, please go to the hospital emergency immediately.
